Perhaps people are after a seachange, I must admit if you're doing a lot of high power high stress managing perhaps a library somewhere would appeal :)

The thing is, there's no way we could pay even half the money such people are accustomed to receiving.

Sadly it's desperation. People when threatened with loss of a home will do anything. We have the same problem where i work. The NHS pays poorly when compared to the private sector. However clinical support positions always get far more applicants in recession, usually from vastly overqualified desperate former profressionals. When the economy picks up again, we'll have trouble recruiting again.

I think you're right in many of these cases. Unfortunately, the job market in library science has been tight here in the US for years now, even before the current economic disasters.
