Oh, glorious! Happy-making from the author's note onwards. Just splendid pastiche, playing both with and against the wit of the original. I mean:

Eeee! Now that was more fun than a barrel full of lithe, oiled acrobats of dubious virtue. I love the way you used language here, remolding Austen in a wry, deft fashion that preserved its dry humor and made it work in new and different ways. And the contrast of Austen-locution with Firefly-locution made the whole thing even more wonderfully amusing. Awesome work!

I come from a modest background, where the barrels are only large enough for one acrobat, or possibly two if petite.

THAT truly was a highlight of morbid and creepifyin'. Was it Darla or Dru who gave her guy a heart she found in a quaint little shopgirl? Poss. they, like chefs, were taught never to waste anything.

In light of recent plagiarism kerfuffles, I must say that "the corner of No and Where" is a line from a Firefly script.

I hope your coachman has kept the matched bays in good condition, and you have a smooth ride in despite of the congelation.

How marvelous! This was just the kind of slyly hilarious cheer-up I was hoping for.

My cousin Ruthyanne had a buck rabbit looked like that once. Only Simon's got dimples and his teeth don't stick out.

Not only am I grateful for your comment, but I have a matching icon!

In a fusion, a certain amount of smooshing and smoothing is necessary to make one source text work with another. Kaylee refused to be as much of a doormat as Harriet Smith, so "Emma" had to yield to "Firefly," whereas I'm afraid I had to be mean to Nandi to make her Eltonian enough. Maybe she didn't talk back to me because she was grateful to be resurrected!

Much obliged, prehistoric_sea. I think it would have been a lot more complicated if I hadn't spaced Frank and cut it down to the main plot, I think.

Thanks for writing this! I am amazed at your ability to blend the two worlds (though I probably shouldn't be). Somehow the Firefly characters and voices are perfect and yet the spirit of the story rings true to the Austen source.

I don't pretend to understand how, only that I am impressed by the result.

Glad you like it. I think what set me off was doing an "Emma" re-read and thinking that Inara's relationship to Kaylee is also a combination of mentoring and hectoring not entirely without an erotic component (because Emma is always going on about how pretty Harriet is).

Also, I can really see Inara being, as Harriet!Kaylee says, a nosy Parker, and being much more interested in Simon because Kaylee is.

I can quote big chunks of Firefly dialogue without necessarily remembering what episode the scene comes from, which to me is a sign of a show with a dialogue gorilla* which not only makes it easier to hear and reproduce their voices but gives me a clear conscience about relocating them to other plots, because TPTB weren't overly concerned about THEIR plots.

*One of my first-ever meta posts was about what constitutes the 600-lb gorilla in a particular media property
