A few years ago a friend of mine (a family friend actually) died. I used to borrow her copies of a certain series of books, of which I only have the first and last books. Recently I was bored and read the first one, to realise that the whole series rocked nads to a mindboggling extent ( Read more... )

William Horwood's Duncton series. Don't read the last three, they're just too bleak and won't make sense unless you're familiar with the ones before them. In fact I don't know that I'd recommend them, even though they're good. I was never sure why they were, in places, nasty when first reading them, but info on the net suggests Horwood's rather unpleasant mother had died as he was writing them, sending him into emotional turmoil. If you can find Duncton Wood, Duncton Quest and Duncton Found (in that order) in a library, do check 'em out.

Thanks hun, I will keep an eye out - but (alas) during term time I seem to run out of time for "reading for pleasure", I love buying/borrowing books so I end up saving them for holidays etc... ah well, we'll see!
