Don't kid yourself into thinking that your personality isn't going to change. A former friend did the full gastric bypass that is non-reversible and he changed dramatically. He went from the jolly fat man to a thin man with an identity crisis and as a direct result, we are no longer friends. I'm not telling you this to scare you. I am telling you this so that you know that things are going to change. Your whole approach must change. You can't rely on it for emotional support. Start finding other outlets to turn to. Turning to your friends and to LJ is a good thing. Good luck with your surgery! I think that if you keep an open mind, talk to a therapist, journal, etc you will find that surgery will be the best thing for you not just because of improved health but because of improved well being.

Just let us know what we can do, okay? I don't feel especially empowered from this far afield, but I have a feeling for how daunting this can seem in your darker moments, and I want to be as supportive as possible, and I think the rest of your f-list does, too. Just let us know.

And I think you have the integrity to retain that which makes you yourself, no matter what happens to your physicality. I think you'll feel like a different body-person from time to time, but I don't think you'll be a different person. If that makes sense....

Still. Keep us posted, fingers crossed, and just keep breathing. I know you'll do fantastic.

I think some of the ugliest situations regarding weight loss are when people want to change their personality, and it doesn't happen. You will be Alana 2.0, and we'll love you no matter what form that takes.

Who you are is not determined by your diet, the size of your clothes, or the way that you look. Will you change? Well, when you look different, you do feel different, but you are still you. You will always be you.

And you are a sweet and wonderful person. We love you, Alana.
