Hermione couldn't leave the common room. She knew it was cowardly, but when she left, she'd have to pass the old dormitory. The dormitory she'd spent six years in, that now belonged to the first years. She'd have to walk into what she'd always thought of as "Ginny's room" and face her roommates, who weren't Parvati and Lavender. She'd have to prepare for Arithmancy (where Terry wouldn't be her partner) and Potions (where Ginny would be). And tomorrow, she'd look up at the teachers' table and Dumbledore and Snape and Professor Burbage wouldn't be there. (She couldn't honestly say she'd miss Snape, but it was odd to imagine a Hogwarts without him.)
But, mainly, Harry and Ron weren't at Hogwarts now. Hermione knew that if they had been there, all the other changes could have been laughed off. But they weren't here and she was alone. It was like her first year all over again, but so much worse because she could miss Harry and Ron now, instead of merely wishing for friends.
"Hermione?"
Hermione blinked. "Oh, hello, Ginny."
Ginny held up a letter. "Pig was tapping at our window. It's for you."
"Oh. Thank you."
Ginny smiled back. "I'll just leave you to it."
"I'll be up soon," she said.
"It's all right. Good night."
"Good night," Hermione replied absently, full attention on the unexpected letter. Hermione turned it over and opened it.
Dear Hermione, it started and then Hermione squinted because the first paragragh had been completely scratched out. She gave up on reading that and moved on.
I'm rubbish at small talk. Besides, I just saw you this morning at the Hogwarts Express and nothing's happened since then. So...really, I just miss you, Hermione, miss you so much, and it hasn't even been a day yet. This going back to Hogwarts business is ridiculous. I'm counting down the days until you're back. Don't think for even a moment that you're going to spend Hogsmeade weekends studying. You're going to come back and visit us, and I'll come and drag you away myself if I have to. Harry says he'll help me.
I love you.
Ron
P.S. I still think you're mad for going back to school when you don't have to, but you're going to do brilliantly.
Hermione couldn't stop smiling as she reread the letter. Yes, most things had changed, but the important things in her life were still the same and she'd be fine.
