I just finished Small Steps by Louis Sachar. It's being marketed as a sequel to "Holes," which isn't quite right--the book doesn't even mention Stanley and it's a very different story. "Holes" and "Small Steps" are more like the Bean/Ender books by Orson Scott Card. "Small Steps" is about Armpit, two years later, trying to keep his life on track ( Read more... )

Oh, good! I've avoided reading it because it's being billed as a sequel, and... I didn't know how he would write a sequel to Holes. It's sort of like the books following The Giver; I haven't read them because I've heard you either love them or hate them. And I adore The Giver and Holes and so... avoidance.

But like you said, it's Louis Sachar. Ah well. I'm glad you liked it, though! :) Now I shall have to read it!

(I noticed you signed up for everyfiveyears! Yay! I can't wait to read what you write for it!! =D)

Stanley isn't even mentioned by name (although Sploosh makes an appearance), so not a sequel. Companion novel, maybe? But it's two years later. I don't know. But either way, excellent book.

I can't wait to read what I write for everyfiveyears either! ;P

I LOVED Holes! I've never read anything else by Sachar (like the Wayside stories), so I'll definitely check this one out, as well as the others. I bet my son would like reading it as well.

Oh, quick warning in regards to your son: one of the characters is a bubblegum pop singer and there are some blink-and-you'll-miss-it references to sex and virginity.
