Smart top and trousers, as long as they are structured. No knits. I recommend a jacket rather than cardi- I have a very smart houndstooth one you are welcome to borrow.

but isn't it a bad thing if the trousers don't match the jacket? (so to speak ;))

Well if they were pink and blue yes, but I am making the broad assumption your top and trousers will be black and a contrast jacket is perfectly fine in that case.

I would say err on the side of smart. I think if you're ever in doubt it's better to be too smart than too casual, especially in a job interview situation. I wore a (grey) trouser suit and white blouse to the interview for my current job, despite them being very casual as a company, jeans and t-shirts common in the office. Though assuming you stick with it, later roles in the company are client-facing and therefore it was good to show you can brush up nicely. And I didn't feel overdressed ( ... )

Smart smart smart. Most formal thing you have is best, but keep comfortable (ie I'd never go in heels to an interview as I'm not used to them and more likely to fall over).

You can't overdress for an interview, all it says is that you are keen to make a good impression.

Good luck with it!

thanks everyone for your help!
I think the upshot is that I can't wear the new trousers I bought for work today, and should go with my (uncomfortable - it's made of bloody nylon!) black suit jacket and some black trousers. You're all right, it's better to stay on the safe side and go with super smart. Hope my coat can go over the jacket too...
Clothes are complicated :/

It's a very important hour or two of your time so you should always dress as smart as possible to an interview.

Or to a club.

Or just the pub.
