what if Charlie's rational mind is saying to him over & over again "I want a cigarette" (or "I want a drink" or "I want (thing that's self-destructive)") ? Breaking that loop might be appealing, rational-mind or not.

You don't know Charlie.

He smokes wile being loudly condescending of crackheads.
He feels he is a "real" magickian. And likes to proclaim it loudly.

I joke with people behind his back that just because someone can mispronounce Enochian, that does not make him a real magickian.

ok, but can you picture him telling himself stuff over & over & over again that maybe he simultaneously (and self-conflictedly) also wants to wipe out of his awareness, mantras might "help" (sorta, temporarily).
