My homework this week was to go through 3 boxes of things labeled "memorabilia". She set a goal to cut it down to fit into a single under-the-bed bin. I don't think so, Tim. ;) But I'll give it a go

My response to organization-nazis who want me to toss my memorabilia:
"Go away now. You are unnecessarily cluttering my life."
Really, the attitude of "nothing in the past is of any value, and nothing that reminds you of it is anything but clutter" belongs in the same dustbin as their attitude about recycling and their ignorance of the costs of throwing things into landfill. In general, of course, yours may not have that particular problem.
So. Yeah, you do want to keep things that KATIE might find interesting when she's older, like the wedding stuff. You want to keep memory-triggers for good times, and the memory-triggers for lessons learned, for yourself.
I really like her approach and countenance. She makes suggestions and encourages me to stop and think about it a minute, but doesn't get all naggy about it like the tv-wenches do. She also knows she's dealing with a genealogist and the odds of getting anything historical pried from my fingers are pretty slim.
These 3 boxes in particular hadn't been opened in forever. I had several duplicates of things that went to the paper recycle bin and pitched some college textbooks like Differential Equations that I know I'm not going to use (I hated the book back then, I'm sure not going to study it now)
She was funny about the yearbooks (which are absolutely staying). I went to such a small school in Mississppi that it was K-12, so the yearbook included EVERYbody. I was only in 1st grade so the yearbook and have no memories from that era - but looking at the hair and clothing styles from the late 60s is HIGHLY entertaining. I think that's worth the storage space!
I've considered going through my massive (literally) comic book collection, scanning every one of them, and then giving the majority of them away for free to the library. Thanks to greed and stupid speculation and the ignorance of eBay it isn't possible to sell them for real collector prices any more.
Last paragraph is very well put and wise. I have kept nothing from my past before Carol and we keep very little from the past as well. I like to think our future experiences will be much better than our memories. Good luck on the homework. It will be interesting to read what the end result was.
