As an addendum to my previous post: no one is a more bitter critic than a former convert. I was so ready to love Lost and tried hard to stay interested in it. But I kept having all these deja-vu reminders of latter-season X-Files ( Read more... )

I agree completely. I loved the first two series, and there have been times watching it that I've jumped out of my chair and yelled at the screen in (delighted) horror. But this series is boring me to tears. Like... when it ends I just go 'pffft' and turn off the computer.

But I can't give up on it mid-season. I have to give it a full go. And I'll probably watch it till Charlie kicks the bucket. ;)

What's going on with Charlie now? My one regret of not following the show anymore is that I have no idea if Dom is ever getting a chance to do anything interesting on it.

Sadly, he's mostly still wandering around being painfully 'British' and looking like a petulant idiot. It's probably for the best, since all of his flashbacks and storylines make me want to pluck my eyes out.

He did get to smooch Claire at the end of the last series, though.

Aurrrrgh. That character had so much potential for him, and the writers are just pissing it away so idiotically.

Frankly I'm surprised Claire would let him near her or her baby ever again after Charlie tried to "baptize" little Aaron. In the first year I would've been thrilled to see Charlie and Claire hook up, but that second season Charlie episode where he snatches her kid really screwed up my enjoyment of their relationship (and his character... and the show...)

Oh, man, I could not agree more. First season Locke was /so/ promising -- the big reveal about his paralysis actually made me teary -- but, yeah, I totally get the latter-days XF comparison to the current season. It's beginning to look like they have no idea where they're going with anything, and that's a real shame. The Chris Carter-style writing, where questions are just answered with more questions, is deeply unsatisfying for me as a viewer.

Looking back, I feel like Carter lost the thread of the mythology in XF as early as the season 3 premiere. "Anasazi" was such a killer finale, so perfect, and then they came back in a muddle. (I also really disliked how they killed off Scully's sister; the implication was that Melissa's death committed Scully to the cause as fervently as Samantha's disappearance committed Mulder, but Scully was already committed by the need to find out what happened to her during her own abduction at the start of season two. DUH ( ... )

I'm so glad I still have my happy on for this show :D

Hell, I stuck with Buffy and got a mess of a season 7. I didn't get an "i love you" from BOTH members of my ship until the freakin FINALE. Lost is delivering better than that, for me :D

The important thing is to tell your story well; then it won't matter if people solve the puzzle ahead of time, because anyone can enjoy a well-told story whether they've guessed the outcome or not.

Excellent point.
