I'm not impressed by Stahl. I don't dislike her, but she's very clearly the love interest in a buddy show--she's being written to be interesting to Kennex, not as a character of her own.
I like Captain Maldonado. I find her a much more interesting and relatable character than Stahl.
It's never a good sign when a female character gets roughed up, and the only sign is a half-hidden bruised/cut cheek. No black eye or blood-stained teeth or busted nose, clothes and hair stay perfect through everything. It's like saying her physical beauty is her most important characteristic. The only things worse are provocatively ripped clothing and shower scenes.
That plot was a whole lot more interesting than the previous ones, but I could have done without the "psychic" plotline. Even if the lady got an implant, that isn't going to give her psychic powers--bring back Naren Shankar!. On the other hand, her interaction with Dorian was very sweet. (Did she realize he was an android, or just not care?)
It was great to see the whole cast getting involved this time and to see them working together. I like John and Valerie's dynamic and I hope they keep it that way. It's always great to have a male/female working relationship that isn't exclusively about will they/won't they, although I think their chemistry is pretty damn good.
Vancouver-plays-L.A. laugh of the night: the "Old Sawmill Road."
PROS: - Car snark - Maldonado motivations and introspection into her feelings about being a woman amongst a ton of testosterone - enjoyed the remote testimony technology - it seemed believable - DORIAN FLIPPED A VAN
CONS: - Detective Stahl. Just... honestly... *sigh* - Kennex doesn't do anything to help Dorian with his 'storage' arrangements - Rudy's great but I'm confused about what his role is in the police department - it seems as if he's the 'solve-all-of-the-problems' guy - the link between cognitive enhancement and talking to the dead is ridiculous - cloning is BAD but manufactured slaves are OK? Show, you have some explaining to do...
Why do you think Dorian asked John to help him convince Maldonado to do something about his living arrangements? Maldonado seems quite sympathetic to him; you'd think he could take the issue up with her directly.
I'm with you on the cloning; that seemed kind of arbitrary (and anachronistic, since for Cloned Bad Dude to have cloned himself 20+ years ago that would basically be...now).
I'm intrigued by the different levels of synthetics. Although the treatment of MX's makes me uncomfortable, I think it's possible that they really don't have "feelings," any more than Siri does. Dorian is obviously sentient and IMO should be given full rights. The Vanessa types are an interesting case; they're able to bond with humans but aren't as self-aware as Dorian (don't have a sense of their own mortality, e.g.) I hope Dorian's desire for his own place is leading to him exploring some of these questions.
I'm very hazy on who owns Dorian. He's Kennex's partner, but is he owned by the PD? The gov't? An outside agency? Maybe Maldonado doesn't have authority over his storage. Maybe Dorian needs a human to advocate for his rights and his closest human contact is Kennex. That's the only reason that I can think of why he'd ask John to get him his own place...
Ooh, that's a fascinating idea--that the synthetics aren't part of the regular reporting structure, but are maybe coordinated through some central office. At the same time, Dorian did ask John to talk to Maldonado, suggesting that the Captain can do something about it. He's also asking John to intervene on a personal level--not to say that it's affecting his job, but driving him crazy and making him unhappy. Interesting!
Show had to go there pretty quickly didn't it? Dorian had a thoughtful maker and was probably over compensating when he made Dorian! :p Just loved the whole car scene.
I'm expecting Dorian to end up living with John...so hurry up show, I want it to happen sooner rather than later.
And...did anyone else notice Kavan Smith aka Major Lorne from Stargate as the lawyer? I gave a little squeak when I saw him... and then he flirted with Sandra at the the end. Oh yes, I want to see it going somewhere...or I need a fic. XD
That bit with Maldonado was controversial, but I liked it, since I read it as Maldonado feeling like she can kick ass on a case AND be attractive to men, whether or not she has any interest in dating them, and that everything the clone dude said was crap. (Command is lonely, after all, for men and women.)
I like what one of our comm mates (sorry, I forget who!) said about it seeming like the future is very isolated. All of the characters we've seen so far are lonely, and none seems to have a functional relationship except for John/Anna (and we know how that worked out).
I have a problem with the John/Valerie shipping, because they are coworkers and he obviously has so many issues to work through before he could be a proper boyfriend to anyone without hurting them. Valerie initiating something with him would be like taking advantage of someone traumatized, so I hope they keep it at this level of "we kind of like each other, but we're not going to do anything about it". I also hope they build more on her character, but the show is still young, so.
I liked the dead people storyline, though. It sounds a bit fantastical, but Fringe was similar in a way and I liked that show a lot.
