The child knocks, and when there's no answer he hesitantly tries the door. He's been looking for Rufus, since he hasn't seen him in a while, and he thought he'd come ask Break.

"Mister Break...? Are you home?"

He thinks he probably is. Big-him doesn't go out since he was attacked, and he figures Break feels similarly.

At the sound of that voice, Break experiences a whole lot of overwhelming feelings all at once.

The first -- and the strongest -- is that he doesn't really want the boy to see him like this. He's been keeping to himself, yes, but it isn't that he doesn't want to see anyone at all ever. It's that he doesn't want others to know just how far he's had to fall because of this. Just as he didn't want to be seen pale and too thin and without his hair five -- no, six years ago, he doesn't want to be seen nervous and shaky and unable to move when it used to be so effortless. The second is that this Liam won't be able to help free him from the mistletoe, and the third is dear God please tell him the boy is not out wandering the city alone, and the fourth is dear God what if he isn't and there's a Barma with him, and Barma could free him but augh --

He takes a few deep breaths to try and clear his head and calls out, "Liam?"

Liam follows the sound of his voice, closing the front door behind him. He sees Break sitting on the floor and frowns just a bit.

"Are you okay, Mister Break?"

He looks... Well, a lot like big-him does when he wants to go hide somewhere, like in the wardrobe.

"Don't -- don't come too close," Break says immediately, even though the boy hasn't even moved away from the door yet. "There's -- I got mistletoed."

Break could definitely go for a wardrobe. And his iPod, and a blanket for his head. And a cat.

Barma's come with the full intention of leaving this and this (both in boxes; the former unaddressed, and the latter to Liam) in either Liam's possession or just unseen (the wind left the both of them a present), but now he has to make a side trip, because loathe as Breaks be, he can't leave one looking like that in good conscience.

So...here is a turtle. Padding along in front of Break. And its mouth opens and asks, in the voice of the Break Barma knows from home, "What is with you?"

...the shit is this?

Break eyes the turtle with an immense dubiousness. For several long moments, he stares at it, wondering vaguely if some Barma or other has gotten himself turned into a turtle the same way he was turned into a cockatoo. If so, it probably says something significant about Barma's personality, and damned if he can figure out what that is in this state.

And also what turtle!Barma would be doing in here. Other than laughing at him. While being reptilian -- cold-blooded, maybe that's it.

At length, he concludes, "I am not a talking turtle." Whether he means this as an insult or is just musing aloud is unclear.

"I am, not you." The turtle says snidely, coming up to him with preternatural speed for a turtle and nudging his foot.

"Mistletoe? And?"

About all Break knows about turtles is that they are supposed to be slow, because that's how turtles are in cartoons. He squints accusingly at this one for not fulfilling its imaginary role properly.

"Mistletoe," he confirms. "And a crippling knee injury, and a very bad PTSD day, and hypoglycemia which is apparently acting up enough to cause me to hallucinate a talking Barma turtle." Nevermind that Break apparently has no trouble talking to things he thinks he is hallucinating. Settling down and trying to keep his breathing even, he points into the kitchen and declares, "If you want to be a useful hallucinatory Barma turtle, go fetch me some juice before I faint. I don't want Liam finding me passed out on the floor when he gets home."

Doors locked or unlocked never bothered Hatter, and this woul be an example as he somehow managed himself out of a kitchen cabinet-

Which allows him to spot Break quick enough, head cockd for a moment before rising to his feet, and making his way over to squat just to the side. He knows enough about the mistletoe to know what it does and can do.

"Break dear."

Even with Hatter, there's a touch of the paranoia that always comes now when he's alone with someone. After all, he's never had a single doubt that Shelly cared for him, and look what happened anyway.

Mostly, though, it's just relief. Hatter will save him from this, and Hatter knows how to take care of him just as well as Liam does now. Wordlessly, breath hitching a little, he holds out his arms to the Chain.

His eyes flick towards the sprig for a moment, glaring at it as if very willing to rip down a door frame, before scooting down close to Break and squated down once again. Hatter slid hands slowly over arms, moving closer without jostling the man much, pressing a kiss to the top of the man's head.

"Evil thing," a little idily as a hand moved under Break's chin to slowly tilt his head, "Tea after."

"And cookies?" he asks hopefully, hands reaching out to latch into Hatter's jacket. He really needs something more substantial, but a few cookies at first won't hurt -- not if he has the oatmeal cookies or the ones with the nuts that Liam's been filling the house with. Liam is clever like that.
