Boo's old owner--a fearless teenager--used to let her gallop as soon as her hooves touched grass.
I do not, for obvious reasons.
Boo can be a bit naughty when we canter on hacks. If she's behind she wanted to relive her cross country glory days by overtaking the other horse. We cantered uphill once. She jumped a bank to overtake the other horse. I was so shocked, I just held on. Then we got to the top of the hill and she had to stop because she was huffing and puffing and had to catch her breath. She was very quiet for the remainder of the hack. :)
Part of the problem I think is that the horse we went out with is in George's field. George and Mags own the rights to the field. They have minions of which loony horse is one. George was very put about that he was expected to follow meekly behind! Oh and uphill cantering good. :-) Ditch jumping bad :-( Well done for staying on. I would have been equally as shocked as you! How is Boo if she can lead with a nice, calm, happy-to-be-behind horse when cantering? Does she then allow you to set the pace? On a sidenote, all teenage pwny owners should never be allowed to gallop. It should be illegal. We should now lobby our M.P. :-D

She jumped up a bank, not over a ditch, thankfully. All that happened in the entire kerfuffle is that one of my feet came out of the stirrup.
I'd like to find a safe place to practise canter with her outside the arena so I can learn to control her and not just let her race for glory!
Her built in safety valve is that she tuckers herself out and then wants to have a rest. :)
