We are really really lucky in that our yard is slap in the middle of a HUGE country park. The park itself is very well maintained with lots of lovely bridle paths. There are some areas where horses aren't allowed but pretty much we can go anywhere. The general rule is that if it is a fenced field we stay out (manicured for humans!) But if it's just one of the general feilds we can canter. We aren't meant to flat out gallop. There are some massive fields where they mow a big strip for us to canter or gallop up and signs warn pedestrians to keep off as there is a chance of extreme tramplage by large snorty creature. It's a wonderful place to have a horse. But, you will find lil canter spots with Boo. It might even be worth finding out if any nearby farmers would mind you riding around the edge of their fields in autumn and winter when the crops are in. It's suprising how many will say yes if approached.
I live in the Pennines which is not very fertile. They aren't actual crops in the vicinity. The land is generally grazing--hence the sheepses and moo cows. Maybe a canter through the sheepses???
