It had been a week since Alex asked Jack to be his boyfriend. When they were together, things were great. When they were together in private. Jack said he was fine with it. Alex knew he was. They were happy when it was just the two of them. They could be themselves, they could hold hands, cuddle up on the sofa. When they were in public, it was harder. They could just be friends. They couldn’t hold hands, they couldn’t do anything that would give them away as being a couple.

He knew that Jack didn’t mind. As long as they could do all those things when they were together and on the one occasion that Zack had been with them, he was happy.

Alex wasn’t though. He didn’t want to hide what they had. He wanted people to know. He wanted to do it right now. Just go to school and let them all know that Jack Barakat was his boyfriend but he knew he couldn’t do it like that, no matter how much he wanted to. He knew he had to tell people one by one, starting with his friends.

When he left Jack’s on the Saturday afternoon, he made his way to Kyle’s house. Him and Kyle had been best friends since they were 4 and Alex knew he could trust him with anything.

To say that Kyle was surprised when he opened the door to Alex was understatement. They hadn’t really spent that much time with each other since Jack came into the picture.

“Alex! Hey, man! Come in.” Kyle rushed, stepping aside to let Alex in. “I haven’t seen you for a while.”

“Yeah, I know. Sorry about that.” Alex said, eyebrows knotting together as he rubbed the back of his neck.

“Are you okay, Alex?” Kyle asked, ducking slightly to look Alex in the eye.

“I’m fine. I just, I need to talk to you about something.” Alex was more than nervous now. He didn’t have any idea how Kyle was going to react to what he was about to tell him. “You aren’t busy are you?”

“No, I was just doing some homework. That can wait till later though. Do you want to go upstairs?” Kyle asked as he slowly made his way towards the bottom of the staircase.

Alex just nodded before following Kyle up to his room.

Shutting the door behind him, Alex moved over and took a seat on Kyle’s bed as Kyle took his place on the beanbag sat on the floor.

“What’s up?” Kyle questioned, eyes fixed on Alex.

“You know I’ve been spending a lot of time with Jack?” Alex questioned, not liking that Kyle was staring at him. It was just making this whole thing a lot harder.

“Jack Barakat?” Kyle guessed and Alex nodded. “Yeah, what about it?”

“If I tell you this, you can’t flip out or tell anyone okay?”

“Alex, seriously. You know I’m not like that. You can tell me anything.” Kyle told him smiling reassuringly up at the boy on his bed.

“We’re kinda seeing each other,” Alex said quickly, closing an eye as he waited for Kyle’s reaction.

“What, like, he’s your boyfriend?” Kyle asked, a smile tugging at his lips.

“Mhmm.” Alex nodded, both eyes closed at this point. He was surprised by the tone Kyle was using. It didn’t suggest that he was disgusted or anything. That’s exactly how Alex imagined this situation playing out.

“Holy shit,” Kyle laughed. “I never saw that one coming. How long’s it been going on for?”

“We started talking online in February. Then we met in person on the first day of term and it just happened from there.” Alex shrugged as Kyle moved from his position on the floor and onto the bed.

“Wow. When did you get together?”

“Last week. I asked him before you say anything about him forcing me into doing anything.”

“Hey! I wasn’t even thinking that!” Kyle shoved Alex’s arm gently, getting a smile in return. “Have you told anybody else?”

Alex shook his head mumbling a ‘no’ and then telling Kyle his plan to tell everyone individually.

“You know I’m always here for you, Alex. I mean, I know this must be pretty hard for you and everything and if you ever just want someone to talk to..” Kyle trailed off hoping that Alex would get what he was saying.

“Thanks Kyle. It means a lot.” Alex stood up and thanked Kyle for being so supportive about it all.

“Don’t mention it. You’re my best friend. It’s what I’m here for.”

“This is why I love you,” Alex chuckled wrapping his arms around Kyle briefly before they said goodbye and Alex left.

Despite his earlier worries, Alex was glad the first person he told was Kyle. It made him believe that when he goes on to tell everyone else, they will be just as supportive as both Kyle and Zack had been since all of this had happened.
