Jack and Alex were currently sat on the porch outside Alex’s house, taking cover from the rain.

“I can’t believe you forgot your key,” Jack sighed, staring at the older boy.

“It’s not my fault! I was in a rush this morning.”

“Right, course you were,” Jack scoffed. “Can we just go back to mine or something? It’s getting colder and this isn’t really stopping us from getting wet.” He said, looking at the water droplets seeping through the cracks in the roof.

“Yeah, whatever.” Alex shrugged making his way to his feet. “Can we run though? My hair, if it gets wet…” He trailed off when Jack started laughing fairly loudly.

“Are you being serious? My house is like 2 blocks away, I don’t think your hair will be ruined that much. Besides, who’s going to see?”

“That’s not the point, Jack. When it gets wet, it goes frizzy. Then I can’t do anything to it.”

“You’re such a girl. Come on.” He pulled Alex’s arm and began to run down the street.

Half an hour later, Jack was sat in his lounge, waiting for Alex to dry his hair. He was just about to see what was taking the boy so long when he heard footsteps coming down the stairs, so decided to just stay where he was.

“Why did Zack say he had a History project to do if he doesn’t actually take that lesson?” Alex asked as he entered the room.

Jack was kind of hoping that Alex wasn’t going to ask that question; he didn’t have an answer that sounded believable.

“Er, I don’t know. I guess he just didn’t want to hang out with me.” He tried to make his voice sad, but failed miserably.

“I doubt it. I mean, I love hanging out with you.” Alex’s eyes widened and his cheeks turned a light shade of pink as his brain caught up with him.

“Y-you do?” Jack asked sitting up on the couch.

“I should start thinking before I talk,” Alex laughed, moving towards the chair. “But yeah, I do. You’re not like my other friends. They don’t care what they’re doing, you’re different.”

“I like hanging out with you, too.” The two boys just sat there looking at each other for a few minutes before Jack realised that he didn’t want Alex to know he liked him and this probably wasn’t the best way to go about that. He coughed, turning his head back to the TV.

“Do you want a drink or anything?” He asked, not looking at Alex as he answered.

“Yeah, do you have anything warm? I’m kinda cold.” He chuckled.

“We have hot chocolate, if that’s okay?”

“Yeah, that’s great.” Jack nodded as he jogged towards the kitchen, asking whether Alex wanted marshmallows. He did; well, who doesn’t?

Shutting the door behind him, he lent backwards tipping his back as he groaned slightly.

He pushed himself off moments later, getting the powder and milk out before getting to the worktop.

He couldn’t let Alex know he liked him like that. He guessed that he knew, the incident before clearly a big give away. Jack hated to think what would happen to the friendship they were developing if Alex found out. Then he remembered Zack leaving him on the two occasions they had both been in Alex’s presence. Jack didn’t really see how Alex couldn’t have figured it out. He was hardly keeping it very discreet.

After stirring the hot drinks, Jack grabbed the marshmallows dropping a handful on top of each of the cups before leaving the room and going towards the cupboard. He pulled out a blanket, tucked it under his arm and then went back to the kitchen, carefully picking up the drinks.

He kicked the door open slightly to see Alex curled up on the sofa.

“I got you a blanket,” he told him, letting it drop onto the older boy, then putting the drinks onto the coffee table in front of them. “’Cause you said you were cold.”

“Oh, thanks.” Alex said, sitting up slightly to wrap it around himself.

“S’okay.” Jack shrugged feeling a pair of eyes glued to him.

Slouching in the chair, he groaned quietly. He didn’t want this. That Friday afternoon at The Rock he didn’t expect to like the person he was essentially friends. He also never expected it to be Alex. The moment he turned around and saw Alex he never expected a week later he would like him as much as he did.
