The Reckless And The Brave - Prologue
Pairing: Jalex.

Summary: Each year, the Capitol of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to fight to the death on national TV - until Alex Gaskarth, of District 11, and Jack Barakat, of District 7, change everything.

Author's Notes: So I was reading jamtards's Jalex Hunger Games fanfiction and decided to write one of my own... so... here it is.

NINE YEARS AGO
As District 11's girl tribute takes her place onstage, the woman in the black dress crosses to the right side of the stage, her high-heeled shoes audibly clicking. She picks a slip of paper from the glass bowl containing the boys' names.
"Thomas Gaskarth."
With half-relieved, half-sympathetic expressions, the other boys turn to look at the one whose name has been called. As he starts to walk towards the stage, a younger boy bursts from the crowd and runs towards him.
"No!" He grabs the older boy's arm. Almost immediately, a whistle blows and several Peacekeepers approach the boys. One of them picks up the younger one.
"Don't go - NO!" he cries as the Peacekeepers carry him back to his parents.
They give the tributes' friends and families time to say goodbye.
Alex is still crying as Tom embraces him. "You've got to win, please, Tom."
"I can't guarantee that, but I'll try," says Tom.
The door opens and a Peacekeeper enters the room.
"It's time."
Tom, who looks like he's on the verge of tears himself, stands up. "I've got to go now." He places his hand on Alex's shoulder and leans down to look him in the eyes. "Whatever happens... be strong... all right?"
Alex nods and wipes his tears away, and then presses the three middle fingers of his right hand to his lips and turns them towards Tom.
