Author's Note First of all, I want to say a massive thank you. Thank you to each and every single one of you who's ever read, reading and will read this story. It's because of you all that I got this far, if it weren't for you lovely readers and your awesome comments I probably wouldn't have finished this story. Not to mention this was a risky story idea in the first place, and I was worried you wouldn't like it. (This is also the first time I have ever ever ever completed a chaptered story so big yay for Afshan.) A lot happened to me personally during the writing of this story and sometimes I felt like just giving up on it. But I didn't because I saw all those wonderful comments people left for me; AND I got story of the week on alltimefanfiction because of a certain atlaregay and seriously thank you for that because that meant so fucking much to me, (gay but true). I'm really glad you all enjoyed it, and hopefully you like the ending as well. But yep so all in all I want to say that I love every last one of you, whether you commented or not, whether you're only just reading this and it's the year 2023. :--)))) Have a great Christmas and New Year!

Jack holds his breath every morning

Light shines through the red drapes, casting a pink-tinted sunrise across the bed covers.

He lies on his side, watching the steady rise and fall of his partner chest, the way his hair puffs out across the pillow, strands of it close enough that Jack could twist it around his fingers without moving at all.

The boy wakes slowly, eyelids fluttering, body twisting towards him as he stretches, yawning wide and rubbing a hand across his eyes.

“Hi,” he murmurs, fingers reaching out to skitter along Jacks chest. Jack's breathes again, light with relief.

“Hey, Alex,” he replies, kissing to his forehead, then his lips, then ducks beneath the covers and lets Alex's giggles wash away the last of his anxiety.

---

Alex goes to college at nine, leaving Jack to his day off work, to wander the markets or clean the apartment or do anything else crushingly normal.

It's spring, and the streets of Paris, their adopted home, are crowded and busy. He blends right in.

They meet for lunch at a cafe. Alex eats the whipped cream off his hot chocolate with a spoon, slips his shoes off and presses his toes against Jack's legs, smiles and watches the stylish world outside them go by.

Alex is light and happy and serene, and Jack desperately clings to that.

He made a promise to himself, to Alex - that he'd never let Alex go again, that he'd never let him get hurt in any shape or form again.

It's been three years now; his Alex is almost twenty-one, and Jack's anxiety only builds as the years go by. Because what if someone finds them and Alex is torn away from him.

Jack thinks he's changed enough to stop that happening, thinks that turning his back on everything they used to know, used to be, should be enough, but he's never sure

He can never be sure.

---

They eat takeout in bed, covers drawn to their waists, legs tangled together, and Jack watches him carefully.

The way Alex's eyes dart back and forth quickly over the subtitles on the television, how his fringe falls over his eyes no matter how many times he pushed it behind his ear.

Alex dyed it purple last year, lost all those blonde locks, and it terrified Jack.

It was a silly, inconsequential, thing, really, but it symbolised something bigger. Symbolised failure. Change. Jack asked him not to change it again, to let it grow back to his natural colour. What, Alex had asked, never?

“Jack,” he says, catching him looking. Jack tries to pretend he wasn't, but he's never been able to lie to Alex. “What's wrong?”

“Nothing.”

Alex inclines his head, and Jack sighs.

“One day you're going to wake and hate me, 'Lex.” he replies. Jack never could lie to him.

Alex laughs, curling closer into his side. “Is that all? Jack, that's never going to happen, okay? Trust me. I love you.”

Jack does.

"I love you too."

Never is an awfully long time though.
