Dusty Backroads - [Lower Decks Engineering, Riviera, Open]

He'd spent most of the night and into the wee hours manufacturing tools to work on a Buick Riviera, and had been fairly well tired by the time he'd gotten the serpentine belt tightened up properly.  He didn't know the car front to back or anything, but mechanics were still mechanics.  And some jobs took two sets of hands, including that; he'd still ( Read more... )

The car, Riviera as it now called itself (between the new human and Leonard it was even starting to think of itself again as "she"), didn't know anything about Cadet Scott. It didn't know his name, or where he was from, or where it now was. It didn't know why he had returned, or what necessitated the making of tools, or why the young man was now ensconced in the front seat even though there was no where to drive.

It only knew that it liked him, and felt desired, and cared for, and while it was overjoyed to have found Leonard again and satisfied in what it had done to bring him here with Bill and De, it felt good to be noticed by someone else, someone who had nowhere to go, either, someone who was interested in it for its own sake. Someone who was there.

There was nothing it could do to show him this, however, except cradle him as gently as it could, and make sure its door and seat springs protested more loudly when he exited than when he had entered.

After several long, somewhat shaky breaths, where he did his best to pull his again ragged thoughts together and not fall apart for what seemed like the umpteenth time in far too short a period, Scotty picked his head back up and leaned back slightly, looking at the beautifully laid-out dashboard. It was so different than modern skimmers, but based on the same initial principles -- speed, fuel, mileage. Intuitive. Silvery and catching the edges of light. No optional heads-up display ( ... )

Riviera, too, felt warm. Not that it ever really felt cold, but it liked being occupied, being useful. Liked the comforting weight, the warm bodies, the sound of voices even though it could not respond. It liked the feeling of wind through the windows, liked the radio being turned up high (it felt almost like it was singing), and now it liked this boy in the back seat and wanted to give him those things, too. The car settled around him, as quiet and comforting as it could be in its limited way.
