I don't know if it is true, but they say sailmakers used to find out which apprentice carelessly bled on the sail by getting them to spit on the stain.
It is also good for food splatters (more common when wearing the finished item) Saliva being designed to break down food. 8->
Re: undoing satin stitch. Professional embroiderers (ie people who do logos on baseball caps etc) remove mistakes by scraping on the back with a razor blade.
Thanks - I should try the razor blade thing (well, I should try to not stuff up so I don't need to undo stitching, but how likely is that?). What I did was basically cut through the threads from the back with a seam ripper and then pull them out, but it's still a pain and takes a while.
