Now that said, I have eczema. It is just as you described it. I get little patches all over. Yes, stress flares it up. It could be some kind of allergy to something - another trigger. As for me, I noticed mine seems to appear a week or 2 before I'm due my next period.
You will get some cream and apply a tiny bit 2x a day and in a couple of days, you will notice a VAST improovement!
I had similar problems one winter - my skin just kept get progressively more dry, red and itchy. I think it was due the changes in weather affecting me. (I usually get bad allergies, plus changes in hormones do that too).
It was so horrible and painful. =( But after I went to the dermatologist he figured out what I should use and I have been fine ever since (I hate that I am dependant on creams/medicines though o_O).
Understand your plight for sure, though - esp. the dislking of going to the doctor. I HATE going to doctors. I always tell my friends who wanna be docs that they better hurry it up so I don't have to go to annoying docs anymore and can just ask them for their professional opinion. :P
