Imagine that you're sixteen years old. You've had your drivers' license for not quite three months. Gas prices are astronomical and sure to reach three dollars soon after that thing with the Louisiana supply being cut off. How annoyed would you be ( Read more... )

Wow. Sixteen. And a license. Very unfamiliar territory.

Yeah, I love how we can't have the glory days of driving.
Then again, female liberation is a good thing to have.

well, technically, your being sixteen and your license-having do not overlap.

How are glory days of driving and women's lib connected? You confuse me.

That was my whole point. I am neither 16, nor do I have a license. That's what I was pointing out with the unfamiliar territory bit.

I was thinking it was cool to get gas for like $.50 in the 1950s, and then I realized it wouldn't be cool to stand around baking.

oh. I thought that was sarcasm. Come to think of it, I often read sarcasm into emails and IMs when there is none intended. Could it be that the human race actually has something to say, and doesn't just constantly mock other people's opinions?

....nah.

P.S. I want one of those badass 50s boats, with a loud radio and connected seats. But I'm envisioning myself behind the wheel, rockin' out, not in the passenger seat in some sweater set with my boyfriend's arm around me.

Gas prices were actually uneffected overall by the war in Iraq, and will likely decrease (against average wages) in the long term. (Insuring the 'friendliness' of one of the largest reserves does that.) Upsets in Venezuela have messed with our gas prices more than the war. The only thing Bush could have really done about oil prices would have been drilling ANWAR, which he tried to do.

Joke, darling. Joke.

I'm actually not that annoyed about gas prices, considering what we'll end up doing to the environment to lower them. I really wish I lived in an area with available public transport, actually, so I could get places without feeling like I'm personally raping Mother Earth.

You're raping your neighbor's lungs. ;P

That said, ANWAR drilling is safer than a lot of the current practices: pipelines don't kill, tankers do. The site with the wildlife concentration can be avoided, the oil-rich area is a relatively small area on the coast: ANWAR is HUGE. It's ridiculous. I should scan the map I have of it that highlights the oil-rich area. (it's in one of my textbooks) I'm not really for or against ANWAR drilling- color me apathetic- but the environmental risks are slight.

In all liklihood, ANWAR is being saved in case of us ever reaching peak oil (which has been supposed to happen in 10 years for 40 years), which is completely cynical.

Huh?

In all liklihood, ANWAR is being saved in case of us ever reaching peak oil (which has been supposed to happen in 10 years for 40 years), which is completely cynical.

That's why we should go ahead and start phasing people into alternative sources of fuel NOW, before it's urgently necessary.
