The little AU: Spring Rising: Prelude

Karl makes it to Portland with plenty of time to sight-see; the green roof-tops, Powell's, where, in the used books, he finds some sci-fi favorites he's not seen since leaving New Zealand and where, as he's paying for them and a few things for Hunter (who's staying with a friend for the week, because it's field trip week at school, and the friend 'specially invited him to stay) he wonders at the trips these books have made, and at the long strange trip that's brought him here, close to Viggo.

Viggo, who's nearly done with filming. Viggo, who's even tinier now than he was in Boston; Viggo, whose beard has grown thick and whose eyes sparkle with joy in the work even as he stumbles along the cinder-sides of Mt. St. Helens. What an adventure this is, this life, what an unusual way to transform matter to energy and energy to matter. How precious, and how ephemeral.

Farther away, farther than he's ever been from them, Orlando goes grocery shopping, goes to Australia, goes to the dog park, goes into the uncharted waters of, perhaps, parenthood. He calls them each regularly, or they call him: when she answers the phone she's friendly, warm- she doesn't judge him for his lovers, doesn't tell him his life is wrongly shaped or out of balance. Orlando leans into this future, leans toward the sweetness and excitement of it, all the while holding fast to everything he has with Karl, with Viggo.

In a few weeks it will be Summer in the Northern Hemisphere, filming will be done on The Road, Karl will take Hunter home to his mom's, and Winter, for a visit, and the seasons will shift. What will not shift is the love the three men have for each other: each day's is prelude to the entire rest of the time they will love each other, and none of them is willing to lose one note of it, sharp, flat, or true.
