He's known this all along, but not so clearly- but in The Road, it's very clear that, as Cormac McCarthy says in the Oprah interview [which I had not seen when this was written, btw] that "You have to have food, and shoes. Have to have them."

And so do the animals need their equivalent of shoes, and of course, food. It's just so much more apparent to him now.
