It's a gentle cha-cha, samba, one of those warm ones from the Equator, and her voice is gentle, kind, reaching out to the one she sings to.

He holds the glass out to an imaginary watcher, laughs once, sharply, as some of the amber liquid (very good whiskey, courtesy of someone in publicity) sloshes out.

Better you sloshed than me sloshed, he says to the liquor puddled on the floor. Small puddles- drops, really, quickly blotted up with the shirt he'd abandoned in haste earlier.

Not so quickly blotted up the tears streaming down his face, splashing off his chest and never quite making it to the floor before the very air absorbs them- the room seems to be crying, too, as he dances to the song kept on repeat (where it's been, where he's been, for the last two hours).

"Hold me, just hold me;
Please don't ask me where I come from,
Or why I cry these tears.
Just hold me, hold me please.

Let me rest in the silence of your embrace.
Give me a moment and don't make me explain.
It's all I need, and all I ask for."

Maybe tomorrow, he promises the bed, the glass, the song, himself, his beloveds. Maybe tomorrow I'll be there with you, and you can hold me then.

On the dresser lie the airline tickets he'd pulled out of his jacket, nearly thrown on the ground in frustration when delays long enough to make the airline offer hotel rooms as compensation had come up; the tickets he'd picked up, gotten exchanged, and stuffed back in his jacket before grabbing up his hand-carry and taking the first shuttle over here.

Overhead there are planes- the whole airport's not on delay, it seems, only his life, only his trip home.

"Give me a moment, and don't make me explain..."

Tomorrow, when he arrives at the small airport near town, tomorrow they'll be there to pick him up, and he can relax in the silence of their embrace, and not explain, not need to tell about tonight, and dancing with the glass.
