It's late Spring, and they've had a chance to re-settle after getting Orli home safely. It's still touch and go what with them all back and forth so much, rarely all in the same place at the same time. But it's more touch and less go, and the touch is warm and solid and real and now, and they're grateful for every minute of it.
Tonight Orli and Viggo are waiting for Karl to get home after a short trip to talk to some people about a movie in New Zealand. He'll be home in an hour or so; Vig's got dinner pretty much ready, and Orli's got things ready for a nice soak after a good shower for Karl who has gotten sort of tired of traveling (as have they all- it's good to go new places, or return to old favorites, but the getting there is wearing). Now it's just waiting.
Never a bad thing, Vig thinks, having a little time alone with Orli to just relax, to listen, to talk, to just be together. Tonight there's a mix CD on the player, something a fan sent to one of them and whoever it was sent to enjoyed it enough to bring it from his agent's to home, and the songs are sweet, philosophical without being harsh, deep without being painful: real, as Vig says, and Orli nods, taking Viggo's offered hand and letting himself be pulled up to dance to the song that's playing now.
"This is sad," Orli says, swaying a bit to it. "Beautiful, but sad."
"Yes, it is, isn't it? It's from a movie, I think," Viggo answers, letting Orli take the lead- they've gotten good at that, switching seamlessly, letting each other lead, letting themselves follow. "Someone dies in it but the other person's able to go on, they've worked that out somehow before hand it seems I remember."
"Like us," Orlando says, slowing down a bit. "I'm..." He stops talking, looks down, away. "I'm sorry I scared you. Earlier."
"No, Orli... no..." Viggo stops talking, looks away, then back. "I won't take away that, but- you were sad, things felt hard. Of course we were worried- I was, Karl was- but... oh, love. I'm just-" glad you're here, glad you're alive, glad you are here in my arms he thinks, but can't say. He can only let himself be pulled in a little closer, feel the warmth of Orli's skin, blood filling it all with fresh life, the scent of coconut and mint on his breath where this week's mints are helping him keep from smoking is sweet in Viggo's nose as he waits for that particular softness that is Orlando's kiss to come. "Orli..." he whispers, but it's cut off by that very kiss, full of life, calm, assured.
The song changes, the kiss ends, Karl's jeep pulls up in the drive, the dogs gather at the door, and they stop dancing. But they don't stop dancing, not really- It's all a dance, everything since Viggo and Karl were tossed out by Natalie, and Karl wove a home under them that was solid enough for Orlando to settle into, and they became three. The door opens, Karl comes in, and they dance on, at the speed of light, toward morning, and the future.
