He's never tired. Either on, or off.

Hunter's taken to their household like a duck in water. Orli calls, and Hunter commandeers the phone for nearly fifteen minutes asking question after question about surfing and pirates, all of which Orlando, with his customary grace, answers as fully as he can, then says, I'll send you pictures, ok? of me surfing? To which Hunter says Yeah, send 'em on th' computador, ok Ohhli?.

He puts the phone down next to his dad and walks over to the railing that overlooks the ocean.

"Is Mummy farther away than Unkah Ohhli?" he asks, suddenly uncertain about being here.

"A little," Karl says.

"Can she wave to him from where she is?"

"Yeah, I suppose she can."

"Ok, then if you talk to her b'fore me, tell her to wave to him so he's not lonely ove' there, yeah, Dad?"

"I will, Hunter," Karl says, "And we can wave to him and to Mummy from here, too."

They stand at the rail and wave, then find their way to the beach where Unkah Vig and the dogs are playing and having fun. Everyone waves to the West, waves as Big as you can, Dad, as big as you can, Unkah Viggo then joins the dogs in a lazy meander down the beach a cluster of rounded rocks and small tidepools where they sit for a bit in the last of the winter sun before gathering themselves up and wandering home again for dinner and a story before bed.

Short days and long nights lend themselves to coziness, Vig thinks as he curls into Karl just before dropping off. I'm so lucky to be here, now. He kisses Karl's shoulder lightly, smiles toward Hawaii, and falls into sleep like a feather onto the breeze.
