They go up to Sonia and Colin's for the day, but she knows them, has rooms ready for them adjoining a bath. She wants Orlando to stay the night, He's looking tired, she thinks but doesn't say. She's got tea on when they get there, fresh flowers in the sitting room, a framed drawing of Orlando's on the wall, something he'd thought long gone but secretly missed being able to show them. Although she can be, as any mother can, overly curious about her son's life, she's come to trust Viggo, and now Karl, to love him, so she only shows them to their rooms, says "Come down when you've unpacked," and leaves them to their own devices.
It never fails to amaze Viggo that Sonia's understood so well. Although, when he thinks about it, she, of anyone, would understand... An adventurous woman, all for love, he thinks to himself as he puts away things in drawers and watches Orlando do his stretches while Karl grabs a quick smoke on the balcony overlooking the outdoors. "I know we said a day, fellas," he starts, but doesn't finish because they're both grinning at him. "All right, overnight tonight for sure, and we'll see, tomorrow?"
"I want to go to the New Forest," Orli says.
"Then we will," replies Karl.
"I want you to see the horses, the New Forest Ponies." The drawing is of one, the horse found only in the New Forest of England, a drawing he'd done, oh, more than ten years ago now after a trip to the Forest with class.
"Then we want to see them too," Viggo says, smiling. New meaning to 'A pony for Christmas', he thinks to himself, knowing that it's not ponies, or even Sonia's graciousness, that makes him feel as though the holiday is finally here, but Orli's smile, his enthusiasm, his arm casually draped around Karl's waist in the old way... that's the best present ever.
