It's very dark in Orli's mind. He's been so certain for so long that just keeping going will make everything work, but it doesn't and it can't and he can't seem to find a way to make it work, make anything work, and it's just so damn dark in there, he can't see anything.
He keeps looking, though, looking for the thing that will work, that will make life light and fun and let him laugh without looking over his shoulder for the demon that makes laughter into a sure draw for pain. He looks through the mail hastily, tosses it in a basket on the table, pours a glass of scotch or whiskey or rum or whatever and sits on the patio looking through nothing, at nothing, because it's dark in his mind.
In the mail in the basket is a card. Hand-drawn on the front, a necklace with different things : a dog's tooth, a yellow stone, various things that are just there, on the line from one end to the other of years of collecting them. On the back, a single word: Light.
