...loving Mary (who is consistently horrible to everyone) and hating Edith for one bad thing she did to the person who has been treating her like shit for no apparent reason probably her entire life.
SMH.
It would almost be funny if it weren't so sad. Judging this fandom very hard.

I don't really understand how people can love and loathe people in this fandom... Pretty much everyone has some highly dislikable moments (maybe not Lavinia, ha.), but at the same time, a lot of the characters are endearing despite their flaws, or have their better moments that make me see as multi-faceted, as should be. I mean, I dislike Robert because he's typically the kind of person who would annoy me irl, but he still had go "YES!" at some point, I'm sure. I was bored to death by Bates, but that didn't make me hate him, I just wished for less screentime. As for Mary... The actress is awfully pretty and graceful, and the character is nuanced. Edith has really grown on me and I wish people (Mary and the fandom alike) would give her a break.
Anyway, I'm rambling... Bottom-line, I agree, fandoms are often unfair with characters.

To be honest, I actually hate Mary a lot. She has some moments when she's actually not horrible, and those always surprise me. I guess the actress is pretty, but I don't think she's stunning, and either way, I treat looks more like a bonus or guilty pleasure, not a reason to like or dislike a character.
but overall, you're right. The show does create very nuanced characters, which is part of why I love it. Other than Mary, I think Robert is the only other character who annoys me...I mean maybe Carson too. BUt I don't hate them.

Prettiness is definitely a bonus and not grounds for liking a character, yeah! But I think a lot of people don't really make that distinction, that would explain the Mary worship. Idk.
