I need to come around to finally read something by Banks ... A good friend of mine - the one who made me read Gaiman - is all enthusiastic about him, both with and without the "M".

Then let me recommend two books, one with and one without the 'M' ;)

While Consider Phlebas is the first of the Culture-Novels, I agree with a lot of his fans in that The Player of Games might be the better choice of starting point. Also, it's half as thick, so if you *don't* like his writing style it#s less of a struggle, and it's cheaper ;)

Iain without an M is a bit more tricky. While The Wasp Factory is a brilliant novel, it is pretty fucked up. Hmmm... Whit and The Business were pretty good, too.
