I have been squeeing like a fangirl so hard since I saw the mini episode earlier this week. OMFSM, I loved Paul McGann's Doctor so hard despite the shitty Fox movie, so this was fan service. I do need to catch up on the radio plays he's been involved in, I hear such good things.
Those names he salutes just before drinking the Sisterhood’s elixir - do you know if they are Eight’s companions from the radio plays/novels? (He didn’t mention Grace, from the movie.) The only Eight stories I’m familiar with are this one and the movie; I haven’t really read many Who books or listened to many of the audioplays, and none that I have featured Eight. Yes, the movie was craptastic (I just re-watched it a couple of years ago), but you could tell by the end that Paul McGann would have been a good Doctor if he’d been given a decent chance.
I'm not sure who the names are, but I haven't listened to the radio plays yet. My love for the man comes from his shining despite that movie. There's probably a wiki somewhere that's torn the whole thing wide open, but it's probably full of as many spoilers as River Song's journal.
I understand that there are several rival, mutually-contradictory continuities in the (audio/paper) book Whoniverse, and that many of the stories fit into one of the other, so that I would have no idea where to begin if I wanted to start now. Therefore, the only ones I’ve bought so far are the ones with Tom Baker. I know him well enough that it’s extremely easy to close my eyes and picture him while he’s speaking; Eight is still mostly a mystery to me. (Q got a few of the audiobooks read by Tennant.) There are several problems with Eight’s movie, but I think the absolute biggest mistake they made was making it a regeneration story. That meant that, for the first half hour of the film, there was a completely different actor (Sylvester McCoy) playing the lead role; and for most of the remainder of the movie, Paul McGann wandered around in confusion not knowing Who he was. Not very accessible to new viewers, and not particularly good for fans either (which is why they were wise to just leap in with Eccleston and save the whole
