yeah, these past three episodes have been pretty awesome. and i had almost lost complete faith in the show during the first "half" of season four. i thought baltar's religion was silly, and the whole mono vs/ poly thing in terms of religion seemed broad and lame in a way that the rest of the show isn't (e.g. roslin having a mystical black woman to help solve her problems).
but now, like you've said, there's a sense that the writing is more focused - like they actually have a plan in mind to end this thing, and it seems like there's a threat of people actually dying (my bet is on tigh being dead, but then resurrecting with ellen, personally).
and i gotta say the fanboy in me totally goes for that SOMEONE MIGHT DIE OMG type stuff. i feel like part of the fun of these shows is desiring to be frustrated and emotionally manipulated by them.
I dunno, 4.0 had some of my favorite eps ever (escape velocity, faith, the hub), though I'll grant you the point about the Magical Negro. I still don't know how they'd handle talking about OUR situation wrt religion and race otherwise, however, not without pissing off a whole lot of people. Have you seen the somewhat acrimonious debate going on in the battlestar comm about Gaeta/Zarek? I don't think that kind of conversation would be possible without the plotting of BOTH Baltar and Roslin as frauds somehow.
And I sooooo hope you are right about Tigh and Ellen.
yeah, i think they're beginning to pull everything together in a way i was beginning to doubt. i guess i felt like towards the end of season three things began to lose their focus? like, lee's career as a lawyer felt kinda hurried and contrived, as did baltar's trial (confession: baltar is my least favorite character). and i thought some of the subsequent stuff about faith felt soapy and sentimental (like when the president suddenly decides to wrap up baltar's wound). though i agree that the sudden loss of faith has worked its way into the current situation *really* well

YES, didn't catch that at first!
And also yes on BSG's strongest suit - it's been just such a wonderful ride. I'll look back on this decade (and the Bush administration more generally) and be grateful for BSG, both as distraction and as means to process some of my anxieties about the increasingly fascist state we had going there (maybe still have? - we'll just have to see about that).
Nay, just read about it - it's dreadful! I have an entry some weeks back on eternal recurrence in the show that's got some links.
Just start with the miniseries, and keep going. There are some eps each season you can skip, but not many (maybe five total?). If you like the miniseries, you won't have any problem continuing, and in fact you may have to just drop out of life for as long as it takes to watch them all in succession.
