Summary: The first time Clark looked at Chloe and wanted more.
------------------------------------------
Clark stood in the doorway of the apartment above the Talon, mesmerized by the view that greeted him. It was poetic and photo perfect. He wanted to capture this moment in his memory. A scene to replay over and over in his mind.
Chloe was standing in front of the large picture window, an almost sleeping infant resting in her arms. The last remnants of the setting sun were glinting off the gold in her blonde curls. The soft sound of her voice, traveling through the air to him. The smell of her perfume and of fresh clean baby wafting up to his nose. Chloe's cheek drifted over the dark cap of hair of the infant in her arms. The vibrations of her sweet lilting voice soothing the child, lulling him to sleep.
Well I've been afraid of changing, 'cause I build my life around you.
"It's amazing isn't it?"
Clark spun around, startled by Lana's sudden appearance beside him. That was a first, he hadn't even realized she was there, but of course she would be...
It was Lana's child Chloe was holding.
"Chloe seems to have the magic touch with him. She always knows exactly what to do to calm him."
But time makes you bolder...
Lana was watching her son and her friend and Clark followed her gaze to watch them again.
"I'm almost jealous of her power over my son." Lana tried to sound put off, but Clark could tell she was more in awe of Chloe than jealous of her.
Chloe ran her hand up and down the back of the infant laying against her chest and placed a kiss on the top of his head, nuzzling her nose against the soft hair there and inhaling his sweet baby scent.
...Children get older.
"Amazing." Clark spoke dazedly, smiling at the sight of it all, of her. Chloe holding the dark haired child to her chest. Looking so much the wife and mother she could be...no, would be someday. For some lucky guy at least.
Would he give her dark haired children? Sharp tongued little hellions with their mother's sharp mind and their father's good looks, maybe a extra special 'skill' or two. The thought came to him so fast and out of nowhere he blinked hard at the very idea of it.
And I'm getting older too.
"She'll be a good mother when the day comes." Lana spoke the words Clark was thinking and he mutely nodded his head, still watching her. Lana was right, Chloe would be a good mother. A kind and knowing mother. A wise mother.
Just like his own mother, only with more witty comebacks.
As if realizing she was being talked about, Chloe raised her eyes from the baby in her arms to meet his. Clark felt his heart jump in his chest as their eyes met.
He had looked at her a million times over in the past 7 years. Found her eyes across a crowded room, or in an empty barn, thought never before had he felt such a jolt to his senses, a sharp pang in his chest, just from looking at her.
For the first time ever, he didn't just feel the safety and comfort of friendship when he looked at her. He was filled with the sudden want and desire...no, the hope, to be that lucky guy who would take Chloe as his wife and give her children to cradle in her arms and sing songs to whilst they slept.
For the first time ever, when Clark looked at Chloe, he wanted more than just friendship.
For the first time ever, when Clark looked at Chloe, he saw not his past, but his future.
