Someone explain to me, what the significance of a mistletoe is?

It's apparently a human custom to kiss under it. Beats me.

It derives from a Scandanavian custom, where if enemies met under it, they were requred to lay down arms and agree to truce for 24 hours. I am not sure how precisely it developed into kissing, but has evolved into a traditional way of celebrating.
