I never really thought much about media representations and their effect on people -- I personally never really had any issues with the fact that I was barely represented on television. Now I have Rachel on my tv nightly, and it really does just *feel* different.

Maybe it's the Baileys and the drugs, but this made me cry because it's so, so true for me, too.

Yay! (Well, not the crying. You know what I mean.) I almost meta'ed about this, actually, but I thought two posts were enough. (Maybe later in the week. ;D)

I was thinking the other day about how religiously I watched Queer as Folk and The L Word, because finally, there were supposed to be representations of me on the TV. But really, my interaction with it was the same as other media: it was entertaining, and had some extra special (focus-group tested and commercially approved) pretty, but there was very little engagement. Rachel speaks my language and talks about things I actually care about, and even when I'm distracted, I always feel engaged in a way that I never knew actually mattered before she came along. And that makes all the difference.

I used to watch the L Word just because it was about lesbians but they don't seem real. I can't relate to them on purely human level - but I can totally relate to Rachel :)

oh and amazing post! I love all these clips.

NGL, I watched The L Word pretty much just for the pretty. *gratuitous icon is gratuitous*

Thanks! It was way too much fun putting them together. (It also took way longer than it should've, thanks to all that fun. :D)

Well done!

...though I'm surprised "The New Poll Tax" didn't make the list.
