Very cool. Always love reading your HighWatcher!Dawn fics, and the Sam Finn cameo was fun. Keep up the good work.

Yay! This was so wonderful!

You know how much I love your grown-up Dawn, and this is obviously no exception. The moral issues in this fic are so interesting and I really like how you deal with them. Like, Faith's thoughts here:

She recognized the look in the girl’s eyes: it was a cold amorality that she had seen in her own eyes before, and in those of others who had worked for the mayor: a willingness to go to any ends, no matter how extreme, to achieve the objective. She knew how dangerous such a person could be.

She was glad Dawn was on her side. The comparison between what Dawn is willing to do with Sam Finn is great. The fact that she doesn't want to sacrifice her ideals, even to save the world, is a great contrast to Faith, Dawn, Giles, and Kennedy. I love that you ended that section with Sam being thankful that the Council of Watchers exists, which is so similar to Faith being glad Dawn is on her side ( ... )

I'm glad you liked it. Personally, my own views probably fall the closest to Sam's, but Kennedy (unlike Dawn?) isn't betraying her principles, just living out a different set than everyone else's. I love Kennedy, too, of course. And Dawn is good at angsting, so I let her do that.

I didn't originally plan to include the Kennedy section (which is why it's epigraph is from a different Housman poem than the other sections), but decided that ending with Sam wouldn't have been hopeful enough.

Thank you!

Over from the masterlist. Really enjoyed this slice of your Watcher!Verse and the bond you explored between Faith and Dawn. It seems to me too that while Giles thinks of Dawn as the new guard and more trustworthy because of that, her experiences in Sunnydale also allow her a closer connection to Faith.
Dawn knew how to use sex as a weapon-most of those lessons having been taught her by Faith herself.
I really liked that bit. You're suggesting there's so much more than just what occurs in the fic. Neat!
You seem to have a section/sentence missing from the Giles part:
or kill a human, that they would be able to take on all those burdens themselves. But the
Enjoyed that a lot :)

One of the things about writing in the Watcher!verse is that I always have a huge backstory I have to deal with. Sometimes it can become a white elephant, but I try to do what you noticed here, making only the subtlest of connection, trusting the reader to either make the connection if she or he has read the relevant stories, or to understand that its not necessary to understand it to enjoy the story. Otherwise, one falls into the approach of the first chapter of the 23nd book in a children's series, where one provides the life history and physical description for a character that has already been described 22 times prior. At best, my approach creates exactly the type of effect you describe--by being exposed to half-told stories, one gets the sense that more is happening than just what falls within the narrative focus. It's one of the reasons that I am taking so long to finish To Live in Hearts.

Thanks for pointing out the error, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
