I am disappointed but not surprised by the ridiculous comments about feminism, but glad that it was still an enjoyable book for the lovely performance portraits and history of burlesque :)

ZOMGZ, the book was AMAZING (as I'm sure the other one will be! AND THE HELLO KITTEH!) and putting my sour-through-a-fine-tooth-comb hat on to critique it including what was actually a pretty funny quote about feminism. It's really an enchanting read, and the performance tips (never wear an outfit you can't take off one-handed and blindfolded) are amazing. I mean, not that I have any designs on being a burlesque performer, but it's fun to imagine (particularly when it involves props like a giant compact mirror and an Erte moon).

Thank you again, so much! xo

My female gaze for Dita is very strong. I heard her actual personal opinions are nothing noteworthy, so I am a bit sexist with her -- I just like to see her move.

I admit, I saw one performance of hers and was disappointed because it wasn't as "effortless" as I would've thought/liked (she seemed to not discard the clothes but hand them carefully off to someone; in her book, she mentioned that she was "Von Fleeced" a bunch of times before she thought to have someone to discreetly hand off the clothes to backstage rather than leave them out temporarily where they'd get stolen). After reading this, I puttered around and found a really good performance that showed she did know her shit, even if I vastly, epically prefer Mae West's version of the song (I realize no one is watching the video to hear her sing):

OT ADDENDUM: After our friendship of what, six years plus? I finally know what your name means. Well, what the "hime" means. AND THAT IS AWESOME.
