[A splash image appears at the start of the following announcement. The image is of a stylized male in an orange jumpsuit and ball-and-chain, kneeling before a provocatively-dressed female security guard. She is fashioned to be the equivalent of a whorish pin-up, her rounded buttocks curved, her breasts pushed out for the delight of the prisoner.

[Javert bats an eye at the caller ID for this message. Does Altaïr even know to whom he is speaking? It is some time before he grants this assassin a response.]
I make the announcement when my superiors ask it. There is nothing barring a legitimate, tax-paying business from posting an advertisement.

[One day he will learn filters. But he lived without them in Somarium and he might live without them here.]
Even when there may be children who might hear such things? It is hardly seemly, you seemed a man with more bearing.

[That is not to say Javert would not tender a resignation if he were ordered to do something he absolutely staunchly disagreed with. This particular... ah, recitation was framed to him as a joke in poor taste, unfortunately. He adds to his initial message to elaborate,]
It is the parents' responsibility to keep their children out of earshot of such things, not mine.

[It's a good thing this one has no nightclub plans but he'll need to figure out exactly where everything is - a lot of his jaunts across the rooftops happen at night in some places, he doesn't want to repeat another run in with Javert until he knows more.]
Do you not worry for the safety of others when you advertise such things? About the type you might attract to such a den of iniquity.
[He doesn't know Javert but from their first 'meeting' he had a distinct impression. This does not mesh well with what he thought.]

[There it is, an outburst, fueled by a moment of wrath. About a minute later comes a second message.]
I am not interested in argument with the likes of you. I do not care to justify anything to murderers.

[Javert can choose if he believes that or not but Altaïr is pleased to know that there are those who do care about the common people when guards are the ones who abuse their power in his time and place. Something to remember then, there will be many notes about Javert in the notes he keeps stashed away in a corner of the den where no one else will find them.]
Would you call a soldier a murderer? There are those who kill for a cause as there are men who must die to ensure the safety of the many.

And you would do well to remember that I do not work for a whorehouse. That is not my 'scene.' Let the law men handle them; I am not certain if whores are a legal commodity in this city.

What are you then if you are not whatever guard or law man [note to self: learn modern words for guards] within Aliunde?

It is an interesting observation, but meaningless in this city.

I feel that were I to approach you to discuss any sort of matter you would not be amenable to it given that you think I am a killer, a rabid dog with no master to bring him to heel. How you know me may be important when collectively we know so little of the Head Doctor who brought us to Aliunde.

Why are you chatting with me today, Altaïr? Do you hope to pander to me? Get on my good graces? With only your word to say you are a changed man? That you swear not to have committed a single murder since you popped up in Aliunde? I have heard better arguments than that from other dangerous men over the past thirty years.

I hope for little. Hope is a fleeting thing best reserved to inspire something in a person when all the world seems truly dark about them or to remind us of our purpose when we forget why it is that we do what we do. [Javert this is most than he says in a week to most people, sadly you will not feel honoured by Altaïr's display of uncharacteristic loquaciousness.] I can swear that my hand and blade have been stayed since I arrived at Aliunde though it will do little to put at ease a mind such as yours or provide any form of reassurance. I am changed but unless you knew the man I was a year ago then it will mean little. I merely wish to stand upon even ground and to assure you that I am not some monster who dreams of ( ... )

However it remains that I claim no authority here. You are getting your chance, however undeserved it is. The good graces are on your side, to begin here with a clean slate!
Keep to the right side of the law and may we never run headfirst into each other like a pair of charging rhinos.
