Dresden Files

Is it just me, or are the Dresden Files books a bit sexist? I started reading the Harry Dresden short story in Naked City* last night, having never actually got around to reading any of the novels as yet, and there's something a tad 'I'm a New Man, honest, *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*' about the tone of it somehow. Or maybe it's just me ( Read more... )

I'm a massive Harry Dresden fan, and I don't have a problem with the books. There are plenty of women in it more than capable of kicking Harry's backside (and people of all ages and races too). Yes, Harry's a heterosexual male and they do admire attractive women, but there's very little sex in the books, and then you've got characters like Murphy (policewoman), Charity (who makes all her husband's armour - yeah, I know, but those two are Christians and have a quite traditional male/female relationship) and the six Faerie Queens.

Which of the books did you find particularly annoying?

I haven't read any of the novels yet, I was reading a short story from a collection published last year.

It wasn't overt, there was a strong female character in the story despite there only being about 4 characters in the whole thing. There was just something that felt slightly off about the way his attitude to her was written, but I did wonder if it was mostly my imagination, which is why I asked what other people thought. I've been reading and writing too much queer romance recently, I think maybe my sexism gauge has become overly sensitive to heterosexuality!
