Reid paced.
He walked in circles until he lost track of where he’d begun looking. He went through everything that had happened last night in his mind, replaying every moment as if listening to a broken record. Because somewhere between entering that pub and coming back to his hotel room a few hours ago, he’d somehow misplaced his cell phone and now he couldn’t find it anywhere.
He’d never misplaced anything. Reid knew where all of his things were at all times. Where the people around him lost their keys, cell phones and a few brain cells to boot, Reid was always in control of everything, including his stuff. He simply didn’t allow himself to lose the things he needed in his life.
Until tonight, of course. Until Luke Snyder.
The realization dawned upon him as he replayed the final moments he’d spent at the pub. He had gotten distracted, had looked away from his cell phone for a minute to talk to the bartender. And that had to be it. That split second had been the first time Reid had ever lost anything.
Luke fucking Snyder.
*
Reid’s phone didn’t ring that night. Not that Luke was expecting it to ring right away. It would take some time for Reid to find a way to get in touch with him, but Luke was so sure it would happen eventually. It had felt so good, so thrilling to talk to someone who didn’t know about his heritage. He’d almost forgotten what it was like, to be Luke Snyder instead of Luciano Grimaldi. Even with Casey, Luke had still had a bodyguard and an obligation to obey Damian’s rules. With Casey gone, back on a plane home to Oakdale with a slight hangover, Luke had lost his get out of jail free card. Talking to Reid though, had felt so different and he had felt so free, free of his responsibilities.
It had only lasted a few minutes, but that had proven to be enough. He wanted more of it, more freedom, more of Luke and less of Luciano, more of Reid. The pressure for him to follow in Damian’s footsteps was building and increasing by the day, and the closer he came to having to face a life as King, the more restless he felt.
He wasn’t ready to lead their Kingdom. The citizens of Malta needed a fearless leader, like Damian, someone who guided them through times of war and prosperity with the same strength and courage and charm. Not someone like him. Though accepting of his fate, Luke found himself undeserving of the title, no matter what Damian saw in him. He was nothing like his father, despite the things he’d been taught throughout the years.
Or was he? Luke had lain awake for most of the night thinking about Reid and what he’d done. Lying to Reid and taking his phone had been so easy. At sixteen, before coming to Malta, he wouldn’t have dreamed of taking anything that didn’t belong to him.
He didn’t regret taking Reid’s phone as much as he’d expected to, and the fact that he didn’t worried him. If you want something, take it. Damian lived by this rule, convinced that being a Grimaldi gave him the right to live without obeying the laws bestowed upon the inhabitants of their Kingdom. And although last night had been the first time Luke had followed that rule himself, it hadn’t been that much of a leap. He’d never felt more like Damian’s son than he did in that moment.
*
Luke was barely awake when he heard the unfamiliar sound. He heard an old song by Justin Timberlake, getting louder by the second and it took him some time to realize what it was. Reid. He frantically stumbled toward the sound, trying to remember where the hell he’d put it. As soon as he found it, he pressed the button he assumed was the right one.
“Dr. Reid Oliver’s phone.” Luke said, trying to catch his breath. “He’s not here right now, but I sure wish he was.”
“I wish that were funny.” Luke’s heart skipped a beat at the sound of Reid’s voice. He felt a rush, a tinge of adrenaline coursing through him from head to toe. “Do you know how hard it is to find a decent payphone on this freakin’ godforsaken island? Why the hell did you steal my phone?!”
“What makes you think I stole it? Perhaps I borrowed it. There’s a difference.”
“Yeah, well, not according to the law. It can’t be all that different on Malta.”
Luke snorted, resisting the urge to laugh. Damian had made it clear several times that the Grimaldi family stood above the law - that they had been granted immunity and could not be held accountable for their own actions. It was how Damian’s brother had gotten himself out of trouble numerous times. Being part of the royal family was about so much more than having an important title and servants to do your dirty work. There was an image to uphold, an illusion that they were untouchable.
And, at first, Luke had found it difficult to cope and deal with the pressure that came with that illusion, but the more time he spent on Malta and away from his family in Oakdale, the more he had started to believe the illusion himself.
“There’s no need to bring law enforcement into this, Reid. If you want your phone back, then all you have to do is ask.”
Luke could almost feel Reid rolling his eyes on the other side of the line. “It’s ‘Dr. Oliver’ to people who steal my phone…which you still haven’t explained, by the way.”
“Borrowed, Reid. My father always says that if you know what you want, you should go after it. He’s a very wise man.”
“And you want my phone?” Reid asked. “If you wanted it so much, all you’d had to do was ask.” He added teasingly.
“Correction - I want its owner.”
“Do you always steal items from the men you want?”
“Only the hot ones.”
“So you do think I’m hot?” Reid asked, letting his voice drop a little.
“There you go, trying to gain the upper hand again.”
“I’m trying to get my phone back.”
“That can be arranged,” Luke simply said as if he was channeling his inner Grimaldi. “What are you doing tomorrow?”
“Doctoral stuff.”
“All day long? You know what they say: All work and no play…”
“Fine, Snyder. What about tomorrow night?”
“Tomorrow night? I…” Luke paused, running a hand through his hair. Tomorrow night was the night of the August Moon Ball, an annual charity event held by the Grimaldi family. The event would take place in the main hall of their palace, and Luke had no choice but to attend.
“I’m not asking you to elope with me. It’ll take you one minute to give me my damned phone back.”
Luke sighed deeply. How on earth would he be able to get away from Damian two nights in a row? There was no doubt in his mind that there would be someone watching him like a hawk. But he wanted to see Reid. He wanted to feel what he had felt tonight. He wanted to be Luke Snyder again, even just for a minute. “Ok.” Luke answered, surprising himself. “Meet me at St. George’s Bay. It’s near the pub we met tonight. I’ll give you your phone back.”
“And I…won’t press charges. Count your lucky stars that you’re mildly attractive.” Reid said. “Nine pm. Be there.”
*
Luke just wasn’t sure what his next step should be - after all, he had lied, cheated and blackmailed Reid back into his life. Reid was understandably pissed.
Luke supposed he should have told Reid the truth from the start. He should have trusted Reid with the truth of his identity. After all, if Reid truly loved him, who Luke really was wouldn’t have mattered.
But it was too late for that.
The door to Bob’s office opened, and Bob poked his head in. Luke discreetly wiped away a couple of stray tears from his cheeks as Bob entered the office fully.
“I see that Dr. Oliver is gone.”
“Yes,” Luke replied.
“I sensed some anger between you two - is everything all right?”
And that was Bob, subtle as a Mack truck. Luke would have laughed if he wasn’t so miserable.
“No, it isn’t,” Luke answered, his voice quiet. He shoved his hands into his pockets. “I’ve upset him greatly, and I don’t think he’ll ever forgive me.”
“You were involved, I take it?” Bob stepped around the desk, sitting down in his chair.
“Yes.” Luke blushed. “We met on Malta. Reid was there for a conference.” He smiled, remembering. “Our attraction was instantaneous. I couldn’t let my father find out about him, so I lied about who I was.”
“I see,” Bob gave him a long look. “Love forgives a lot of transgressions, Luke.”
“I’m pretty sure he never wants to see me again.”
“Then it won’t matter to you that he’s staying with Katie, or that he’s gone home for the day.” Bob kept his gaze locked on Luke.
“I should…go,” Luke murmured after a moment.
“Of course.” If Luke wasn’t mistaken, Bob winked at him as he got up to leave.

Reid took the hottest shower he could stand when he got home. After leaving Luke in Bob's office, he'd actually bumped into Bob in the hall. He'd given Bob a piece of his mind, but Bob had simply smiled, and then told Reid to take the rest of the day off.
So here he was, standing under the shower spray, his head hanging down as he tried to bury his thoughts and lose himself. He wished that the water would wash away all of his thoughts, that he could kiss all his feelings goodbye and watch them swirl down the drain.
Of all the things he'd expected today, seeing Luk - Luciano had not been one of them.
He cursed his photographic memory - because it wouldn't let him do the one thing he wanted so desperately - forget.
The doorbell rang insistently, and Reid swore, turning off the water, and grabbing a towel. He dried off hastily as the doorbell ringing switched to obnoxious knocking. He managed to slip on a pair of black jeans. Reid headed into the living room, dashing the last few feet to the door. Water droplets still clung to his naked chest and back as he pulled the zipper up on his pants.
“I’m coming, damn,” Reid called. He pulled the door open, intent on chewing out the idiot on the other side, but stopped short. Luke - Luciano - stood in the hall.
Reid was going to say something, anything, to get him to go away, but the way Luke’s eyes devoured him wiped away any thoughts Reid might have had.
There was no sound but their labored breathing as they drank each other in, and then Luke moved, kissing him soundly.
Reid yanked Luke inside, slamming the door with his free hand. He pushed Luke backward into the now closed door with a loud thump. Luke let out a grunt, but their lips never separated.
Luke’s fingers tangled in Reid’s hair, pulling, and Reid hissed against Luke’s mouth. Hands frantically tore at clothes, and Reid was pretty sure he ripped Luke’s shirt, but he didn’t care.
All that mattered was getting his hands on Luke’s skin. Reid’s fingers dug into the pale skin of Luke’s chest, tangling for a moment in Luke’s chest hair before reaching the waist band of his pants. Luke followed suit, and together they stripped each other of the rest of their clothes.
Once naked, Reid shoved his thigh between Luke’s legs and moved in between them, grinding hard against Luke. He moaned, a broken sound from the back of his throat, and Reid could feel the vibrations against his cheek where he was mouthing Luke’s neck. He slid down until he was kneeling before Luke, his mouth wrapped around Luke’s cock and sucking before Luke had even realized what he was planning on doing.
Luke’s head flew back, hitting the door with a hard thunk sound as Reid went to work, a steady stream of Italian escaping from Luke’s lips. He had no idea what Luke was saying, but fuck if it wasn’t the hottest thing he’d ever heard. Luke was trembling against the door, his hands practically ripping the hair from Reid’s head. Reid pulled his mouth away, and looked up at Luke, meeting his gaze. Luke’s eyes were dark with desire, and Reid surged up, capturing Luke’s lips with his own again.
After a moment he ripped himself away, and forced Luke to turn around, pushing him face forward up against the door.
He brushed his finger along the crack of Luke’s ass and then realized -
“Fuck,” Reid gasped. “I don’t have -“
“Pants pocket,” Luke managed, turning his head to the side. Reid couldn’t help but smirk.
“Well you just thought of everything, didn’t you?”
“I go after what I want,” Luke replied, his eyes flashing. Reid pressed a hard kiss to his lips.
“Don’t fucking move.” Reid bent down, finding Luke’s pants and pulled a small bottle of lube and a condom out of one of the pockets. The little shit really did come prepared.
He could feel Luke’s eyes on him as he stood back up. Reid opened the bottle and squirted lube on his fingers. He spread Luke’s legs as far as they would go, using this thigh for leverage, before pressing two of his fingers into Luke.
Luke cried out at the sudden intrusion, and maybe if Reid hadn’t been so fucking angry he would have taken it slower, but Luke didn’t ask him to stop, so he kept going. He moved his fingers, stretching Luke for a moment and then adding more lube and third finger. Luke was scratching against the door, his legs shaking. When Reid moved his fingers, finding Luke’s prostate, Luke actually pounded the door with his fist.
“Reid,” he cried out, and Reid knew he couldn’t wait any longer. He slipped on the condom, lubed himself up, and slid inside Luke.
It was tight and warm and holy fuck, felt way too much like home. His hands took Luke’s hips in a punishing grip - he’d be surprised if Luke didn’t have bruises later - and it seemed only moments later Luke was coming, Reid’s name on his tongue again.
Reid kept thrusting, kept moving, wanting it to last, and never wanting it to end. He could feel it building though, pleasure sweeping over him as he came with a growl. He stilled, and then pulled out of Luke.
They both sank to the floor, spent. Luke turned around so he was facing Reid, hope in his eyes.
Fuck.
“So…royalty, huh?” Reid found himself asking.
“Yeah,” Luke replied softly, and then he grinned. “How does it feel to have fucked the future king of Malta?”
*
Luke was lying with his head on Reid’s chest, just listening to Reid’s heartbeat. The sound was soothing in his ear. Combined with Reid’s fingers combing lightly through Luke’s unruly locks of hair, and Luke was about near asleep. He knew that Reid needed some answers though, wanted them, and Luke couldn’t sleep until he’d told Reid the truth.
“I was a messed up kid,” Luke began. “My parents split up and remarried so many times, that I began to feel like it was my fault.” Reid grunted, but didn’t say anything. “I know now that it wasn’t, but at the time…anyway, I kept looking for an escape.” Reid’s hand drifted down toward Luke’s side, running his thumb over Luke’s scar.
“Does that have anything to with this?” Reid asked. Luke knew that Reid had been dying to ask him about it since their time on Malta, but had waited for Luke to talk about it first.
“Yeah,” Luke breathed out the word. “Between my parents, and trying to deal with my sexuality, and being in love with the guy who scored me the alcohol…” he trailed off. “I eventually ran myself down to the point where I got a double kidney infection, and it got to bad enough that there was nothing they could do…so, transplant.”
“How old were you?” Reid’s voice was quiet.
“Sixteen.” Luke answered. “And I kept drinking even after that because I couldn’t deal with anything, and finally, it got to the point where my father, Damian Grimaldi, was contacted.”
“That probably didn’t go well.”
“No, it didn’t,” Luke murmured. “I was so angry. I had two years to go before Damian was supposed to come. He and my mother had agreed that I would go to him when I turned eighteen and learn what I needed to learn to run Malta.” He sighed. “Damian took one look at the situation, and convinced me to come back to Malta.
“He tried to change my sexuality once I’d kicked the alcohol, but eventually realized that it was of no use,” Luke chuckled. “Let’s just say the people of Malta were scandalized and some new laws had to be passed in regards to same sex marriages and the ‘heredity’ of the throne.”
“So you basically turned an entire country on its head,” Reid said. “Just like you did with me.”
“Hush,” Luke muttered. “The night that we met, Casey Hughes, Bob’s grandson, was visiting me.
“I never expected to meet you or to fall in love with you, Reid.”
“I can safely say I didn’t expect to do the same.” Reid agreed, tightening his hold on Luke.
“You were the first person in six years to see me as ‘Luke’. To everyone else, I was Luciano Grimaldi, heir to the throne.” His tone was bitter. “I rebelled. I kept you a secret because I didn’t want to lose you.”
“What happened that last day, Luke?” Reid asked. “You crept out of my bed, and I never saw you again. You wouldn’t return my calls, and I-“
“I know,” Luke murmured. “My father found out about you. I didn’t know what else to do…and then you were gone. I thought about calling you, but I didn’t think you’d answer and I just…” He sighed again. “I screwed up, I’m sorry.”
“You know, it’s a good thing I like you, Mr. Snyder.” Luke gave him a smile at the name.
“I think so.” Luke leaned up and kissed Reid.
“So what are you gonna do with me now?” Reid wanted to know, sound uncharacteristically vulnerable. “How long are you here for?”
“Until the end of next week,” Luke whispered. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I just…knew I had to see you again.”
With that, Reid pulled him into another kiss, and neither of them talked for a long time.
