I'm playing with the point of my blog a bit.  I'll still post fiction because I like doing so, however I will also be posting frequent open ended questions pertaining to the field and study of English Literature.  Most likely I'll also include art ( Read more... )

I adore things like Agatha Christie and Georgette Heyer, but to me they are comfort books, not challenge books. They could be taught as 'genre' examples, of course.
That's the difference between Literature A level and Lit/Lang. For example, in Lit/Lang they compare Tom Brown's Schooldays to Harry Potter, studying changes in the genre of school fiction. (Which is then reported in the Telegraph and the Daily Mail as "students dumb down to study Harry Potter at A Level...sigh...)
As for slogging your way through outdated speeches...well, I'm assuming you're playing Devil's Advocate here, Fea...Shakespeare should be studied because he does things with language nobody else does. Because his use of imagery is astonishing. Because he a master of dramatic irony. Because he understands what it is to be human and then questions the human condition, better than any writer I can think of. If you don't believe me, ask Dr Who...;-)
