Asking "do most major news articles on this topic accurately describe the research and its implications, or do they totally miss the point?" is also useful (though sometimes depressing) if you're interested in scientific literacy of the general populace...

*nod* Yeah, you hear a lot about this on Language Log especially. They have regular beef with the BBC, which is both entertaining and sad.
