Scientific paper commentaries

My brother's applying for a scholarship where he has to read one of a set of articles on recent scientific discoveries and then comment on it. Specifically, he has to answer the questions: why is it newsworthy? how does it advance the field? what would you do next if you were the researcher? Asking "do most major news articles on this topic accurately describe the research and its implications, or do they totally miss the point?" is also useful (though sometimes depressing) if you're interested in scientific literacy of the general populace...

*nod* Yeah, you hear a lot about this on Language Log especially. They have regular beef with the BBC, which is both entertaining and sad.
