It has been brought to my attention that "slash" necessarily means "gay". I think I confused it with "shipping" or something.

Actually! I've seen it argued (and argued, and argued) that slash can (but maybe shouldn't) refer to any non-canonical pairing. Half-assed Googling suggests this concept started with X-Files, but I mostly see it talked about these days in reference to stuff with canon same-sex relationships, like Queer as Folk and The L Word.
