This reminds me of the magic I discovered in the radio I was restoring this semester. It similarly had a switch, but had two wires connected. However, on close inspection, it turned out that one of the wires wasn't actually connected to anything. And yet, flipping the switch to that position caused the radio to be able to decode CW and SSB! It turned out there was just enough capacitance from that disconnected wire to cause oscillation and make everything work. It took the longest time to figure out, though.
