Not quite. Maybe a school shooting.

Hmm, I might have said Ragnarök rather than Hiroshima -- but either way, I'm afraid that endpoint can only be achieved via direct stimulation of the relevant neural circuits.

Usually Japanese food marts have dashi... I've even been able to find it in Carson City, so I'd imagine your area has it somewhere.

And I think miso is more the quintessential Japanese flavor, at least in my mind, but *shrug.*

I haven't been able to find a specifically Japanese grocery that's within walking or public-transiting of MIT, but I probably just need to ask around. I went to the Super 88 the other day, which seems to mostly do Chinese, but also I could have just not been paying enough attention.

I'm semi-quoting Shizuo Tsuji there: "many substitutes for dashi are possible, but without dashi, dishes are merely `a la japonaise' and lack the authentic flavor." Miso is different, yes; I happen not to like it as much, but *shrug*.

The Lotte on Mass Ave. should have dashi.
Reliable Market in Union Sq. certainly does.
Kotobukiya in Porter Sq. Certainly does.

Hey, I've still got three packets of dashi left from SF! It's good stuff, and makes a lot of servings. I'll give you a packet next time you're over.

From now until the last week of classes, I'm completely hosed. But maybe we can make some soup together that week before finals?
