I hate writing those kinds of recommendations - where you honestly don't have glowing things to say but (at least for me) you feel bad telling them that you're not a good choice to write it for them. Whenever a kid like that asks me, I assume it's because they literally *don't* have anyone who can write a glowing recommendation. It doesn't mean I change what I'm writing about them, but I hate trying to put something decent together when I honestly don't have very nice things to say.

And I even flat out told him "I dont think I can write you a strong recommendation" and he still insisted!!! Yikes.

I ended up writing phrases like:

"On the rare occasions that I receive them, he produces solidly written research papers"

"Though easily distracted by peers in class, he demonstrates above-average knowledge of the subject material when directly questioned"

.. What else can you say?

I think that's a good way to do it - it's honest and gives respect where respect's due without pretending he's something he's not.

My husband currently teaches sixth grade science and absolutely misses high school anatomy & physiology. The maturity level of the students is a big part of it as well as the subject matter being so much easier.

Yes, those few years are so developmentally critical! I really notice the difference and I teach 9th, so it's not a big leap from 7th!
