it made sense to me... as a fellow teacher, of course. if i had wanted them to bring paper i would have said "BRING PAPER!" "something to write on" means just that, a firm, relatively smooth surface to put a piece of paper on!

i think some ppl (not just students but ppl in general) kind of like to play dumb.

When I read '...something to write on...', I interpreted it as 'paper'.

But wouldn't you think "I'm going to need to write on this pre-printed quiz while sitting on the beach. That's flimsy. How will I write on it?" :P
