Part II:
Andrew’s hand flopped unceremoniously onto the ringing phone on the bedside table, fingers fumbling to lift it from its cradle. He squinted in the dim light to look at the screen.
“Did you forget it’s four hours later here?”
“No, I just knew you’d be awake.”
“Barely.” Andrew grumbled.
“Is this what you always do while I’m away? Just lie around on the couch and in bed all the time?” Theodore leaned back in the lounge chair on the balcony outside his hotel room, light wind tousling his hair.
“I’ve been sick, Teddy.” Andrew rolled his eyes.
Theodore frowned.
Andrew sighed, twisting and shifting onto his back. “I didn’t mean to snap, love.”
“You still not feeling well?”
“No. I think it’s gotten worse.”
“I thought you said you were better.”
“I was. Then I regressed.”
Theodore felt guilty for having called so late.
“It’s all right, Teddy.” Andrew could see Theodore’s lopsided half-smile, his warm brown eyes gazing softly back at him. “You were right, I was awake. Even if I didn’t want to be.”
A few moments of silence passed between them, each staring into the distance and nothingness before them.
“How did your golf excursion go?” Andrew couldn’t help but smirk as he asked.
“Dreadfully. But I was saved from making an idiot of myself.”
“Really? How did you mange it this time?”
“Not by my own devices, I’m afraid. Just as we got there, it started pouring rain… and then hailing.”
“The forecast said it was supposed to be sunny there.”
“It was about three hours later, not a cloud in the sky. Nice right now, actually. Wait, how’d you know that?”
“Weather Channel.”
Pause.
“I wanted to know what the weather was supposed to be like for you.”
“You realize you’re becoming the fretting housewife.”
“I am not.”
“Watching the Weather Channel for me? What’s next, you start packing my clothes for me? I haven’t found any little ‘remember me’ gifts in my case yet…”
Andrew rolled his eyes, “That’s because there aren’t any.”
“I’m so disappointed.”
“I’m sure you are.”
Theodore waited a moment, mouth curving in to a quirky smile, “It’s all right, I’ve thought of a way for you to make it up to me.”
“And what would that be?” Andrew wondered if he really wanted to know what was on Theodore’s mind. “And don’t use that stupid line of sending you nude photos to your mobile.”
Theodore snickered.
“That wasn’t funny.”
“Yes it was.”
“You weren’t the one who had to frantically explain to James why it looked like I’d sent him nude photos of myself.”
“I do wish I could have seen the look on his face. Oh come, And’… They weren’t even really you. I just photoshoped your head onto a random body I found on the internet.”
“Of course I knew that! But James didn’t, did he?”
“It was supposed to be a joke. I’d send them from your mobile to mine, delete them on mine, leave them in your sent box, and wait.”
“Except you got the numbers in your phonebook mixed up!”
“That was just an accident. It could have been worse- I could have sent them to one of your brothers.”
Andrew paled.
“Exactly.”
Andrew groaned, “Must all of our conversations come to this?”
“What do you mean?”
“We always end up bickering about something… something pointless and probably stupid, that you’re always responsible for.”
“You’ve had your fair share of mishaps, too.”
“I wasn’t stripping in the kitchen. I was pulling off my sweatshirt and the shirt came with it. I had no idea your sister was coming over.”
“The shirtlessness wouldn’t have mattered if you had been wearing pants.”
“Like I said, I had no idea your sister was coming over. And I was in-between doing laundry and taking a shower.”
“Uh-huh, sure.”
“At least it was Rosie. Otherwise I’d be afraid she’d have been scarred for life.”
Theodore chuckled. “She and I are strikingly similar.”
“But that doesn’t mean I appreciated the comment.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“No, her comment.”
“Oh, right, that one. What you didn’t hear, because you were darting away like a scared cat, was me complimenting you.”
“What did you say?”
“I just agreed with her.”
“You agreed with you little sister that I had a hot arse?”
“You do.” Theodore could feel the intensity of the glare Andrew was undoubtedly giving the ceiling fan at that exact moment, “What was I supposed to do? Lie? Tell her that I didn’t think my lover didn’t have a-”
“I get the point, Theo.” Andrew sighed. He yawned. “See? We’re doing it again.”
“Okay, we’ll stop. We’ll talk about something else, then. How’s the weather there?”
“Teddy…”
“Are you feeling any better? I meant to call and ask you last night, but we had a dinner meeting, and you know Beckett- that means drinks and lots of them.”
“I still can’t believe he hasn’t been fired, yet.”
“He gets the job done. And can you really get fired if you’re in business for yourself?”
“True…”
“But he was picking up the tab, so all was well.”
Andrew laughed quietly.
“You are feeling better though, aren’t you? I’ve been worried about you.”
Andrew felt himself smile. “Yah, I’m all right. Not exactly how I wanted to spend most of my break, but at least I didn’t have to miss any work.”
“James over it too?”
“He called yesterday to see how I was, he sounded a lot better. He’s back at work, of course.”
“Does the man ever rest?”
“I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s not actually human, but a high-functioning robot disguised as one.”
“I knew it.”
