He wished he could protect him from all the pain and hurt that seemed to run rampant in the world. He wished he could forever hold him in his arms, safe and guarded from harm.
James sighed and looked down at the sleeping redhead in his arms. Andrew’s head lay against his chest, hair spread across his cheek, draping down the back of his neck. The collar of his nightshirt had shifted, giving a pale, teasing glimpse of smooth skin, and the beginning of his spine, bone just barely showing through the layers of muscle.
James lightly rubbed his shoulder, through the thin fabric, as he lay on his back, gazing down at him.
Andrew’s breath was warm against him. A hand had come up to rest on his chest, just in front of his lightly freckled face as he slept, mouth open slightly.
In his sleep, he looked even younger.
James rested his chin on the part of Andrew’s hair. He cradled naught much more than a boy in his arms. He had learned never to question or mention his youth and age in front of him, as Andrew grew very upset whenever he did.
He wanted to be treated as he thought he ought to be. It was not because of his age, though he was not a child, but because of how he chose to act. He was more mature than many others his age, mentally and emotionally. He made his own choices, and for his own reasons. He may have been a boy not long ago, but he certainly wasn’t one, now. He was nearly eighteen.
James was to be twenty-three.
The difference did not matter to him, Andrew had told him, eyes wide and clear as the day. He was not the most experienced, nor did he know as much about the world as he could, but he knew himself; he knew his heart. His heart had belonged to James since before they had met, it seemed. He loved him deeply, and he always would.
James tightened his embrace unconsciously.
Andrew let out a contented sigh, body resting comfortably in his nestled position on top of James. His foot twitched, toes tickling James’s ankle.
If there was one thing James could be uninhibited about in his teasing, it was that Andrew was at least a good five inches shorter than he was.
He would always stop, after a while, when Andrew’s sweet blush had burned through to turn his ears scarlet. He assured him he could still grow. When he had met Theodore, he had been four inches shorter than James, but now they were nearly eye to eye.
But gentle teasing between friends was not more than that. The world was an entirely different creature, a new beast to tame, if it could be tamed at all.
James smiled softly.
He would have to settle for doing he could to keep him safe, knowing that he couldn’t protect him in full from the world, and even if he could, he knew that he shouldn’t.
James kissed his forehead, lips remembering the touch of the soft skin against them. He had settled for less before, but would never settle for anything less, again. He had Andrew, he was his own, and Andrew had him, forever, and for always.
